Shaun Micallef's MAD AS HELL, American Punditry done Australian style

Australian funnyman Shaun Micallef parodies American style pundits for his new ABC show, 'Shaun Micallef's MAD AS HELL'. Micallef's second foray into satirical news after 'Newstopia' in 2007

Shaun displays impressive improv chops reminiscent of Stephen Colbert whilst carving his own path, the program owning its Australianness and preserving Shaun's signature absurd style. The show's title comes from the movie 'Network' (1976). News Anchor, Howard Beale famously rouses his discontented audience with an impassioned "I'm Mad as Hell" speech. APF pundits Keith Olbermann and Glenn Beck have channeled Beale in recent years, Micallef similarly has modeled his comedic Anchorman after him.

All Pundit parodies will forever be judged on the gold standard that is Colbert and Micallef holds up capably as the following monologue shows. Stephen Colbert parodied the bravado and naked passion of punditry with lines like "I speak straight from the gut, okay? I give people the truth, unfiltered by rational argument" and "The 'truthiness' is, anyone can read the news to you. I promise to feel the news at you".

Read Micallef's own fresh take
MAD AS HELL Intro. Episode 4
SHAUN MICALLEF: What's all the whooing there. Are you out of your minds? Your sounding very American. You know I don't like that. It's crazy, its the start of the show. Its completely uncalled for reaction in my view. I'm sorry about starting the show in this way. Gun's down, the gun's down. I'm sorry I've never pulled a gun on an audience in my life
I'll be honest with you, I'm very angry this week and I'm not sure why. I feel a certain way about something but when I actually think about it I get just as angry but for a completely different reason and that makes me mad. So my anger this week is unfocused and double what it would be normally. So when how we feel and what we think are on the same road but are traveling in opposite directions you're on a collision course with blind fury and I don't like blind fury. It makes me furious! That's right I'm talking about...

Keith Olbermann and Rush Limbaugh appear on Seth MacFarlane's 'Family Guy'

VIDEO: Rush Limbaugh on FAMILY GUY! w/ Seth MacFarlane

Rush Limbaugh and Keith Olbermann do share something in common. They've both lent their talents to Fox's 'The Family Guy'.

Rush Limbaugh recently played himself on a recent episode where he ideologically converted the Family Dog, 'Brian Griffin' a staunch liberal. Rush' appearance has caused quite an uproar amongst the right who feel it is an unworthy vehicle for Rush:
Rush Limbaugh on Family Guy--Why?
Rush Limbaugh is due to appear on "Family Guy" as himself on Sunday, October 3rd. Considering the reputation that Seth MacFarlane's show has for childish, gross out, far left humor, Rush's fans are asking why.

One explanation might be the same reason Jesus associated with the Pharisees and other people of bad repute; that the audience of "Family Guy" is very much in need of Rush's wisdom.
Rush Limbaugh spoke to Radio Equalizer to explain why he accepted the invitation to appear on 'The Family Guy'
Exclusive Interview: Rush Limbaugh Answers Critics Over Family Guy Starring Role
RADIO EQUALIZER: Did you get a lot of flak at the time for the Playboy interview? Similar to this? A question I've received: "why's he helping lefty Hollywood types who hate us?"

RUSH LIMBAUGH: Yes, I did. And on other occasions I can't recall. This is my third Family Guy but first as the star. Seth MacFarlane doesn't hate me. Or Andrew Breitbart, who he met on Maher's show and really liked.

Besides, it was a new career challenge, a new experience. It was a LOT of work. I sing, and I'm deaf!... I'm a performer. This was fun. Seth wants to do even more.

Seth was among the FIRST to reach out to me in Hawaii when I had that heart scare. I am not helping the Hollywood Left. His show is going to be on the air regardless what I do.

BUT, the better way to look at this is that they bent for me. I did not bend to them. It's not as though I endorse or support libs on this show. The other way around. A huge lib character becomes a conservative.

RADIO EQUALIZER: Thanks, Rush, we'll be watching.
Limbaugh's ideological counterpart, Keith Olbermann has also lent his talents to 'The Family Guy'. Watch Keith hosting show creator Seth MacFarlane and writer Alex Borstein on his 'Countdown' show talking about the 'Family Guy' and his involvement in it.

Marc Maron's WTF podcast Ep 23: Wyatt Cenac talks pundits and professional wrestling

Sean Hannity VS Keith Olbermann
On November 9, 2009 Cable News rivals Keith Olbermann and Sean Hannity were in attendance at Yankee Stadium for Game 6 of the World Series. On March 15, 2010 Wyatt Cenac performed a sketch that used the analogy that American Punditry was like professional wrestling.

At the time of the sketch I speculated whether the analogy was simply drawn from the ether like it had been so many times. Or quite ambitiously, perhaps somehow this blog was in their orbit.

On November 19, 2009 Marc Maron hosted Comedian and Daily Show correspondent Wyatt Cenac on his WTF podcast. Among other things they spoke about punditry, pro-wrestling and the interactions between Sean Hannity and Keith Olbermann at that baseball game.
WTF with Marc Maron Podcast: Episode 23 - Wyatt Cenac (starts at 39min mark)
WYATT CENAC: ... It gets frustrating... You can watch Hannity or Countdown. Then you can watch Hannity or Olbermann talk about each other or each other's networks. Or talk about how horrible the other side is. Yet then they can take photos of each other at a Yankees game like its no big deal.

MARC MARON: Like you said before, it really is all professional wrestling. The sad thing is, people are really struggling for a lot of different reasons... and they don't really know what to do with those frustrations. So when you've got these ideologues or these pundits... who are driving media culture leading them in a direction. They just want some temporary relief or some satisfaction and they are so easily misguided in times that are desperate...

Because like you said these guys are going to Yankee games together... having steaks and beers, laughing at the different sides they're on but are in the same business. But a great many people in the country just want some resolution or truth. Something that will bring them together that isn't based in some kind of choosing sides.

WYATT CENAC: Maybe in some ways we need pro-wrestling to step up...
The discussion is quite incisive and expansive moving on to speculation that Keith Olbermann and Sean Hannity should take a page from the Iron Sheik and Hulk Hogan. The conversation degenerates into absurd imaginings of an Annual "Pundit Cage match to the death". Its worth noting that the act of preserving the illusion that wrestling is real is called 'kayfabe'.
MARC MARON: ...We've rendered down [hatred in America] to a problem with professional wrestling. But sadly there's always going to be the crazy caller type of person who still will not be able to deal with the fact that the Iron Sheik and Hulk Hogan will have lunch together
WYATT CENAC: And that's when we need to do a better job with our professional wrestlers. When the cameras are off they still can't interact...

... with the amount of hatred and anger that they seem to have for each other... the way you guys [Sean and Keith] talk about each other I expected that you guys would have just picked up bats and started going at each other
MARC MARON: Own it! Stay in it. Stay in character. Maybe if we had Olbermann and Hannity dress up as professional wrestlers...
Read Keith Olbermann's original posting on his Sean Hannity encounter at the World Series below:
America's Biggest Small Town
And lastly, a reminder that baseball does erase boundaries. The guy [Sean Hannity] I'm taking a photo of, who's taking a photo of me [Keith Olbermann] - we get along perfectly at the ballpark - less so during our day jobs.
Wyatt Cenac expands and popularises the Wrestling analogy on a later episode of the 'Daily Show'
- Jon Stewart, Wyatt Cenac and Mick Foley endorse the analogy that American Politics is like pro-wrestling

Keith Olbermann responds to Jon Stewart's crtitique

VIDEO: Keith Olbermann's response to Jon Stewart

Keith Olbermann responded to Jon Stewart's critique of him by replaying Stewart's skewering of him in its entirety and sheepishly apologising. Olbermann also referenced an earlier parody that Ben Affleck did of him for SNL in 2008.
KEITH OLBERMANN: Well yesterday Mr Stewart was first critical of Rachel [Maddow] and then last night of me... seriously Mr Stewart's critique of me won't mean much unless you see it so I will show it in a moment with 2 prefaces only

1) Jon you invited me on the show in 2003 and I said I couldn't make it because of the taping time. It didn't mean I couldn't make it forever. What, you can't pick up the phone and make a jingle?
2)I think it should be noted that when Affleck did this he didn't have a teleprompter. That guy was a technician like Rembrandt was a technician.

(Daily Show clip played in its entirety)

You want some baseless name-calling? You are... You know what? You're right.I have been a little over the top lately. Point taken. Sorry.

Jon Stewart once mocked Glenn Beck by parroting the manic conservative pundit's patented monologue. Stewart recently did the same for Keith Olbermann, mimicking his brand of self righteous speech. This isn't the first time Stewart has chided Olberman.
Transcript via InOtherNews
"For years, sir, your outrage was warranted - based in fact, saturated in reason; marinated in malice, but tenderized with the cleaver of careful consideration, once wielded so masterfully by the demigods of discourse whose very chair you sit (in): Murrow, Cronkite... You fought your fight, and you fought it furiously and forthrightly. But is it a fight, if ill-foughten folly? Ferhaps. How far, sir, how far will you fall once you’ve toiled in the fields of the factual, equal parts punditry and profundity, with prodigious prose? It was as powerful as it was purple.

But now, this! Now, this, sir! This, sir! This, sir! And, no, sir, this TelePrompter is not stuck! I am doing something called repetition for dramatic emphasis, sir - you invented it. I like it. But now, you’re just calling people names.

To whit, you said this of Joseph Isadore Lieberman, Democrat, Connecticut: "A senatorial prostitute"; of Roger Ailes, "fat ass"; Chris Wallace, "a monkey posing as a newscaster"; Rush Limbaugh, "a big bag of mashed-up jackass." (All right - I’ll give you that one.) And of Michelle Malkin, you said "A mindless, morally bankrupt, knee-jerk, fascistic mashed-up bag of meat with lipstick on it," end quote. That, my fine-feathered friend, sounds a lot more like violence against women than anything Scott Brown ever said.

You can’t resort to childish attacks that are as hominem as they are nauseum. You’ve ceded the high ground and now you wallow in the fetid swamp of baseless name-calling, and as you know, sir, that’s my thing… A man of your intellect need not be me - petty, pompous, pusillanimous - or poopyhead."
Impersonations have their home in comedy sketch shows like SNL and are a staple in punditry, these theatrics are also found in politics as Hillary showed last year mocking Candidate Obama. Not to be outdone wrestlers are also fond of using impersonations to get the psychological edge over their opponents.

Keith Olbermann challenges Bill O'Reilly and Glenn Beck over Dick Wolf's Law and Order

Keith Olbermann went on his patented 10 minute promo, challenging Glenn Beck and Bill O'Reilly over their objection that Dick wolf's Law and Order defamed the conservative pundits by misrepresenting their stances on illegal immigration.

VIDEO: Keith Olbermann Goes Off On O’Reilly And Beck
for their take on Dick Wolf’s 'Law And Order'
KEITH OLBERMANN: NBC's Law and Order and executive producer Dick Wolf make a passing reference to the hot and cold incitement to hate and violence that Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck and Bill O'Reilly constitute and Beck and Bill-o act as if they have been violated

'LAW AND ORDER' SNIPPET PLAYED
Person 1: I don't get why you're defending this wacko?
Person 2: I think its the symptom not the disease...
Person 1: That symptom killed 3 people
Person 2: Garrison, Limbaugh, Beck, O'Reilly. All of em, they are like a cancer spreading ignorance and hate. I mean they've convinced folks that immigrants are the problem not corporations that fail to pay a living wage or a broken health care system...
Olbermann's rant involves a pre-emptive defense of fellow liberal talker Janeane Garofalo and a taunting roll call of every prominent Conservative talker and writer in the media from Matt Drudge to Mark Levin and the "Coultergeist". Olbermann credits Bartcop's original post on "The Myth of the liberal media" in his tirade.

Pakistani journalists grill Secretary of State Hillary Clinton

Apologies for the lack of updates on the APF blog, experiencing technical difficulties.

To get back in the swing of things, it seems America has successfully exported its brand of freedom to the Middle East. In this case bringing American-style braggadocio to Pakistani journalists.
Deadly Car Bombing Clouds Clinton's Visit to Pakistan
MARGARET WARNER: Well, today, yes, she met with the president and the foreign minister, but she also had this very contentious roundtable, for example, with Pakistani TV journalists.

One aide said it was like being in a room with Bill O'Reilly, Keith Olbermann, Glenn Beck, and Chris Matthews, and they're all shouting and firing questions at you. And she returned it...

And, so, she's trying to go beyond just the official meetings. Now, tomorrow, she is going to Lahore. And both tomorrow and the next day, though the schedule is being kept quiet for security reasons, she is going to have semi-public events, taking a little bit of a risk, but wanting to engage, really through Pakistani media, to the broader Pakistani public.

The Keith Olbermann / Bill O'Reilly feud continues however KO shows solidarity against Rupert Murdoch

In a previous post I wrote about the possible end to the long running feud between Keith Olbermann and Bill O'Reilly. A ceasefire reportedly organised by the corporate higher ups to protect business interests. Keith on hiatus at the time of the NY Times article was said to have not been a "party to the talks".

Upon his return Keith immediately disavowed the speculation by placing the NY Times reporter, Bill O'Reilly and Fox owner Rupert Murdoch on his 'Worst Person in the World' list. Ironically in denying even the thought of civility between himself and O'Reilly, Keith does the opposite

VIDEO: Keith Olbermann's "Worst Person in The World"
Rupert Murdoch & Bill O'Reilly
KEITH OLBERMANN: How dare you muzzle O'Reilly Mr Murdoch, how dare you sir? This is the essence of corporate interference in the marketplace of ideas and it is shameful... Solidarity Bill, free yourself from your corporate shackles. Solidarity! Rupert Murdoch - who could never get away with that here - is today's worst person in the world

The end of the Bill O'Reilly and Keith Olbermann feud? Fox and GE call a truce

bill o'reilly, keith olbermann, feud
The biggest feud in punditry: Bill O'Reilly and Keith Olbermann
Could this be the end of one of the biggest feuds in the Pundit World? The New York Times reports how Fox and MSNBC management have orchestrated a tentative ceasefire between Bill O'Reilly and Keith Olbermann for the sake of business.
Voices From Above Silence a Cable TV Feud
It was a media cage fight, televised every weeknight at 8 p.m. But the match was halted when the blood started to spray executives in the high-priced seats.

For years Keith Olbermann of MSNBC had savaged his prime-time nemesis Bill O’Reilly of the Fox News Channel and accused Fox of journalistic malpractice almost nightly. Mr. O’Reilly in turn criticized Mr. Olbermann’s bosses and led an exceptional campaign against General Electric, the parent company of MSNBC...

Both moguls expressed regret over the venomous culture between the networks and the increasingly personal nature of the barbs. Days later, even though the feud had increased the audience of both programs, their lieutenants arranged a cease-fire, according to four people who work at the companies and have direct knowledge of the deal.

VIDEO: John Cena & Randy Orton shake hands and call a truce

Keith Olbermann hinting that this might not be the end of the feud
Mr. Olbermann, who is on vacation, said by e-mail message, "I am party to no deal," adding that he would not have been included in any conversations between G.E. and the News Corporation.

Ed Schultz attacks Hugh Hewitt and the Salem Radio network

In the early days of this blog I featured a feud between Liberal talker Ed Schultz and fellow liberal Sam Seder and network Air America. It was a heated affair, most notable as they were ideological familiars arguing mostly over business and aesthetic. Started because Sam Seder had lobbied for friend Thom Hartmann to replace Al Franken's newly vacated spot on the Air America programming at the expense of Ed Schultz.

Ed Schultz is the number #1 rated Liberal talker, granted a new show on MSNBC recently which is still finding its audience. The feud with Sam Seder demonstrated Schultz combustible personality and one wonders how he would treat a conservative rival or network. Wonder no more. PunditFight presents Ed Schultz' feuding with conservative talker Hugh Hewitt and the Salem network

Liberal talker cuts a vicious wrestling-style promo on Hugh Hewitt and the Salem Network

VIDEO: Liberal talker Ed Schultz calls out the Salem Network and Hugh Hewitt

Ed Schulzt's promo in a conversation with guest Virg Bernero, Lansing Michigan Mayor who made quite an impression of his own with his impassioned promo on the state of the car companies.
ED SCHULTZ: Hugh Hewitt. He‘s writing in "The Washington Examiner." He tells readers, don‘t buy GM or Chrysler cars. That‘s right. He says there‘s only one answer for conservatives angry at President Obama and the government for getting involved in the automobile industry. He says boycott...

Buy Ford, buy Toyota, buy anything. Conservatives, are you folks out of your mind? Do you know how many Americans have lost their jobs in manufacturing?...

And what do they do? They push back on the American families that are doing the absolute best they can to build a great product. And you conservative talkers, and I mean there's a collection of them on the Salem Radio Network. I mean there's Hugh Hewitt, there's Prager, Medved is in this crowd as well...

You know I‘m going to ask the listeners across the country to the Salem Radio Network, why don‘t you just boycott them? Prove to me that you‘re an American...

And by the way, they're advertising to American listeners, don't buy it. What do you say we just kick the American worker in the teeth?... Let's just genuflect to the Hugh Hewitts of the world.

This is what we voted against. These psycho talkers that are out there.

Hugh Hewitt offers his rebuttal in a discussion with callers and Conservative author Jonah Goldberg
- Listen to the audio between Hugh Hewitt with callers and Jonah Goldberg on Ed Schultz

Conversing with a caller Hugh Hewitt takes a dig at Schultz' former incarnations (as a sportscaster and conservative) and includes his MSNBC counterpart Keith Olbermann in the mix
H2: Jonah Goldberg (Tuesday June 9, 2009)
HUGH HEWITT: I'm not going to call him an idiot, he's a sportscaster like Olbermann. They do not understand economics, they do not understand politics. They do not understand my arguments so I can't expect them to...

Again there are a lot of these guys, Olbermann used to be somewhat normal, they'll do anything or say anything for ratings and they'll scream and attribute to people positions they don't hold. This whole hate stuff. Its disingenuous, I don't think its very effective. I think they're stuck because when they had Bush to beat up they had a built in marketplace and now they're playing defense on Obama and it just doesn't work...
Ed Schultz offers his counter to Hugh Hewitt, courtesy of RadioEqualizer

VIDEO: Ed Schultz says he would pee on Hugh Hewitt
"MSNBC's Schultz Wants To Pee On Political Foe"
ED SCHULTZ: They worship money. They don't value human life the way they claim they do. That's a hoodwink.

So I guess Hugh Hewitt has never taken out a loan in his life. He's never had to depend on anybody else. He's probably the worst neighbor in the neighborhood. That's just a guess, I don't know that.

But I'd bring him over for a cocktail party. Sure, then I'd urinate on him, 'cause that's all he's worth.

Anybody who talks like that about the American worker is not an American, is anti-American and wants to see this country fail

Eric 'Mancow' Mueller adamantly tells Keith Olbermann "Waterboarding stunt was not a hoax" as Gawker.com insists

VIDEO: Mancow Waterboarding hoax?

KEITH OLBERMANN: I would think that knowing you briefly, if it was a hoax it would have been a much better hoax than this one, Mancow from Chicago's WLS once again in bizarre circumstances
MANCOW: I play pranks all the time, that's the irony here
OLBERMANN: And this isn't one of them
MANCOW: This was real
(note: Mancow's wife and daughter are constantly in frame in the background)
The last time a 'hoax' was accused in punditry was during a fainting on Glenn Beck's program. In that instance, Glenn Beck's constant theatrics made people doubt the authenticity of the fainting episode. In this instance, Mancow's reputation as a juvenile prankster and the reporting from Gawker fuelled the fire.
Did Erich 'Mancow' Muller Fake His Waterboarding for Publicity?
Yesterday we showed you video of Erich "Mancow" Muller, a Chicago-based right-wing shockjock, appearing as a guest on Keith Olbermann's show to discuss his being waterboarded. He claimed it led to an ideological conversion! But now a tipster has provided information that suggests the whole thing may be a hoax.
Read Gawker's response to Keith Olbermann's dressing down of its "sloppy" investigative reporting - Mancow's 'Waterboarding' Was Completely Fake

Again just like in wrestling this often happens because of the constant way they fold reality unto itself. Interesting that this hoax has come on the heels of the anniversary of Owen Hart's death, where the legendary wrestler tragically died in a live stunt that had many wrestling insider's and fans initially dismissing it as another "wrestling work" - a staged event to fool audiences. Even to this day "staged on-air deaths" remain a recurring storyline in wrestling.

Listen to wrestling pundits hoaxes or "works" within wrestling storylines. From the 'May 24' episode of LiveAudioWrestling
JOHN POLLOCK: A lot of fans at that time when that happened on PPV (on-air death), the natural reaction of any wrestling fan is that its an angle (a wrestling storyline) and you look at some the stuff they were doing at that time in 1999 and that really wasn't out of the realm of possibility for WWE to do something like that

Howard Stern, Mancow, Opie and Anthony talk politics: Waterboarding, Obama supporters and Pete Dominick

People often picture talkers like Rush Limbaugh and Michael Savage when thinking of influential radio personalities in politics. There is another breed of talkers separate from political talk, who command equally formidable audience who also tackle the subject of politics.

Sometimes referred to as "shock jocks", Radio personalities like Howard Stern, Mancow and duo 'Opie & Anthony' are wildly popular talkers who appeal to a broader and younger audience. Their shows deal with topics ranging from sex to politics with a format more risque and juvenile than regular political talk.

The talkers less likely to be politically partisan, most consider themselves "libertarians" as reflected in their very liberal content which include guests like strippers, comedians and rockstars. It's also worth noting that this category of talkers are more likely to appeal to the wrestling fan demographic.

To demonstrate the reach of these "shock jock" talkers compared to regular political talkers, consider "America's Anchorman" Rush Limbaugh's 20 million listeners and reported $400 million paycheck. 'King of all Media' Howard Stern commands an estimated 5 million listeners and a paycheck nearing $500 million as a pioneer for Satellite Radio. In terms of political influence however the "shock jock" talkers are considered to have less sway as they appeal to a younger hence arguably apathetic or more casual political listener base.

I will highlight each of these "shocks jocks" and feature a relevant political episode

Matthew Erich "Mancow" Muller
Mancow made headlines by volunteering to be waterboarded live for his radio show, following in the footseps of Christopher Hitchens amongst other journalists. Colin Powell referenced the stunt in an interview illustrating how well the video was circulated.

Keith Olbermann who had earlier dared conservative talker Sean Hannity to follow through with his own boast of volunteering to be waterboarded interviews Mancow on the experience.

VIDEO: Mancow tells Olbermann "Waterboarding is torture"
KEITH OLBERMANN: Let's stipulate at the beginning, you and I are not gonna agree about anything politically...
MANCOW: Let's find some comon ground. First of all Sean Hannity called me and said, "It’s still not torture." I said, "Sean" — he is a friend of mine — "it is torture." All right. But look, you are giving 10,000 dollars to the VeteransOfValor.org. So I think you are stand-up guy for doing that. That's why I'm sitting here.
OLBERMANN: That's are common ground...
MANCOW: Now let's fight
Update:
Conservative blogger speculates that Mancow's waterboarding stunt was well planned hoax, Mancow denies it.
Lefty blogs punked by Mancow "torture" stunt(?); Updated
Now, there’s a paper trail that suggests the glaringly obvious — that it was all an elaborate hoax, reportedly orchestrated with the help of Jerry Springer’s publicist.

Time for B.S. detector tune-ups, people. Next time, libs, don’t be so eager to hype a veteran radio entertainer crying “torture.”

You’re the ones who end up all wet.
Opie (Gregg Hughes) and Anthony (Anthony Cumia)
Opie and Anthony regularly welcomes wrestlers and comedians. APF pundits Marc Maron and Pete Dominick have both appeared on their show, talking politics with a looseness and vulgarity that typical of their act but otherwise stifled on their own programming. Demonstrated in Pete's last appearance on the show here -
Pete offering a disclaimer for his appearance with Opie & Anthony
Pete on Opie and Anthony this Morning
This is the audio of Pete’s appearance on Opie and Anthony this morning. Topics include stand-up comedy, guns, and torture. This is NOT a POTUS-style chit-chat, so if you’re easily offended, don’t listen.

Howard Stern
Howard Stern's associate producer 'Sal', conducted an experiment during the 08' Presidential election where he would ask self confessed Obama supporters misleading questions. Sal would credit campaign policies that were originally John McCain's to Barack Obama, the test was to see if Obama's supporters would support views based on Obama's endorsement rather than on their individual merit.

VIDEO: Howard Stern - Sal Interviews "Obama Supporters" in Harlem
HOWARD STERN: It's so ridiculous for people to argue politics with anyone because most -- I'd say 99% of people don't know what the fu@ck they're talking about. So Sal went to Harlem yesterday and he questioned black people on who they were voting for. Obama pretty much they all said in Harlem... He'd list all McCain's policies but attribute them to Obama and they [black people] were all for McCain's policies

Howard Kurtz discusses partisanship, polarization and villainry in Punditry: Olbermann, Maddow and Hannity

VIDEO: Cable turns Caustic - CNN 'Reliable Sources' panel on "high decibel" punditry
State of the Union: Reliable Sources - May 24, 2009
KURTZ: Well, I have often argued that the important thing is to have -- no matter what your strong views are -- and it's fine if you're a host, if you're a commentator, to have strong views -- to have people, guests on who have opposing views. I think Keith Olbermann would be more interesting and I think Sean Hannity, now that he's lost Alan Colmes, would be more interest if he had, they had people who flatly disagree with them. On rare occasions they do.
The discussion turns to the therapeutic value of punditry
FREI: No, absolutely. But I think -- and here's the point -- you can actually turn it around. You say this is really good for democracy because it's therapeutic, it's cathartic.

So if you're really mad, you watch these guys who are even madder than you, and you think, you know what? I'm going to -- it's like my kids. When my kids bawl in public, they see another child crying, they stop crying and they watch...

ASHBURN: Hey, I think it completely riles everybody up, just like this. I mean, the more emotional you are, and the more passionate you are, the more you're crying, the more you're yelling, the more people...
This is reminiscent the argument Matt Taibbi laid out in his essay 'Keep on Hatin', a media cycle he describes as "Blame, Hate, Coalesce".
Don't APF hate. Perpetuate!? Matt Taibbi on the vicious circle of hate in punditry
It is amazing to me that people can walk into a bookstore, see a pair of books whose titles begin with "I Hate...," and still believe that the two books are different, simply because the politics of one are conservative and the politics of the other are liberal. Even though it is astoundingly obvious, I'm beginning to think that the vast majority of Americans will not realize until it is too late that this is the same shit.

John McCain's mother, Roberta McCain calls out Rush Limbaugh and Keith Olbermann on' The Jay Leno show

At 97 years old, John McCain's mother Roberta McCain takes the record for being the oldest person to call out an APF pundit.

When Jay Leno asked the elder Mother McCain "which commentators bothered her on the left" she remarked
ROBERTA McCAIN: Olbermann - Myself I can't figure out the type of person who really, more or less gets joys denigrating people, humiliating people. I'm just not that type of person and I don't have friends like that and thank God I'm not around people like him.
Jay Leno naturally followed up with "Who annoys you on the right", Roberta McCain didn't give a clear answer but offered this about Rush Limbaugh once Leno insisted:
ROBERTA McCAIN: What he [Rush] thinks about or what he represents about the Republican Party has nothing to do with my side of it. I don't know what the man means, I don't know what he's talking about... well also the Chairman of the Republican Party, Steele was exactly right when he defined this man as an entertainer and to my horror the Republican Party made him back up on it. Limbaugh you're a compliment when he says you're an entertainer. I don't know what he is but he does not represent the Republican Party I belong to
VIDEO: Roberta McCain on the 'Tonight Show with Jay Leno' (5/13/09)

Meghan McCain proving to be quite the 'wrestling heel' (villain or provocateur) gleefully twittered "I love that my Nana talked smack about Rush on Jay Leno..."

To which a FreePer astutely noted that
Meghan McCain happy that her grandmother "talked smack" about Rush last night
Her "Nana" also "talked smack" about Olbermann, but she didn't seem to love that.
It will be interesting to see if Rush Limbaugh or Keith Olbermann return fire at 'Nana McCain' considering her frail age. Both have the merciless personas capable of it and a show format that would support it.

Pro wrestling never had a problem with keeping the gloves off no matter how old the targets or aggressors were. As this blog has proven, Punditry looks to follow suit.

Update:
It didn't take long, Rush Limbaugh responded to Roberta McCain on his program following day. A tame response all things considered but it did have a cheeky illustration
roberta mccain, rush limbaugh, john mccain, mother, shoot
McCain's Mother Dumps on Rush!
RUSH: She's right. She's absolutely right. The Republican Party she belongs to get shellacked election after election after election. Man, send McCain's mother out to dump on me? (laughing) No, I love it. I love it. Her son said the same thing. (impersonating McCain) "He's just an entertainer, he's just an entertainer, got it, got it? He's just an entertainer, he-he, he-he, he-he. He's a clown, good clown, circus, that's it. He-he, he-he. You got it?" I don't know what the man means; I don't know what the man means.
With Rush's 'Stop or my Mom will shoot' reference gives McCain the Stallone trifecta having been likened to Rocky, Rambo and now Sgt. Joe Bomowski from the aforementioned movie.

Time Magazine: Top 10 TV Feuds featuring Stephen Colbert, Bill O'Reilly and Keith Olbermann

Last year in the wake of the Jon Stewart/Jim Cramer fight, Time Magazine compiled collection of The Top 10 feuds highlighting its origins, notable quotes and their "Chance at reconciliation". Four and a half APF pundits were featured, some making multiple appearances; Keith Olbermann, Jon Stewart, Bill O'Reilly and Stephen Colbert. Tucker Carlson counts for being co-host of 'Crossfire', representing the conservative viewpoint for the debate show. Not surprisingly these feuds have been well documented on this blog.

The list is as follows:
Top 10 TV Feuds: Prickly Personalities
1) Jon Stewart v. Jim Cramer
2) Stephen Colbert v. Bill O'Reilly
3) Bill O'Reilly v. Keith Olbermann
4) Jon Stewart v. Crossfire
5) Donald Trump v. Martha Stewart
6) Dan Rather v. CBS
7) Elisabeth Hasselbeck v. The View
8) Donald Trump v. Rosie O'Donnell
9) David Letterman v. Oprah
10) Matt Lauer v. Tom Cruise

VIDEO: Stephen Colbert interviewed on 'The O'Reilly Factor'
Stephen Colbert v. Bill O'Reilly
The feud:
Largely manufactured. Colbert's TV persona on "The Colbert Report" is clearly an homage to the blustery bombast of the O'Reilly Report — he even calls O'Reilly "Papa Bear." The two agreed to appear on each other's show in Jan. 2007 in a good-natured mock debate.

Chance at reconciliation:
We have no doubt that Colbert is mocking O'Reilly; that's clear to anyone. But as O'Reilly said, imitation is the clearest form of flattery. These two won't be fast friends, but it's a symbiotic relationship; good for everyone.

He Said/He Said:
"If you imitate someone, you owe them a royalty check. If you emulate them, you don't. There's a big difference. Check your lawyer.
— Stephen Colbert, Jan. 18, 2007

[Colbert] owes his whole life to me, and I'm happy to give it up for him.

John Ziegler on the intelligence of viewers and Bill Maher, Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert being seen as "real news"

JOHN ZIEGLER: The reality is, people are stupid. And a lot of people do think Bill Maher or Jon Stewart or the Colbert Report or SNL actually is real news information and frankly its becoming more and more difficult to argue with those people because news has completely disintegrated in this day and age
NORAH O DONNELL: I think that's difference between us John, I don't think they think it is news... I think that people understand that it's a parody
This exchange links somewhat to this study from Ohio State University on the difference Conservatives and Liberals have in perceiving satire:
The Irony of Satire
Political Ideology and the Motivation to See What You Want to See in The Colbert Report

...we found that individual-level political ideology significantly predicted perceptions of Colbert's political ideology. Additionally, there was no significant difference between the groups in thinking Colbert was funny, but conservatives were more likely to report that Colbert only pretends to be joking and genuinely meant what he said while liberals were more likely to report that Colbert used satire and was not serious when offering political statements. Conservatism also significantly predicted perceptions that Colbert disliked liberalism.
Update
Keith Olbermann welcomes Heather LaMarre, lead author of the "Colbert Study" as guest to talk about her findings investigating the differences in how conservatives and liberals digest the 'Colbert Report'

Keith Olbermann offers Sean Hannity $1000 per second to be waterboarded

Keith Olbermann challenges Sean Hannity, offering money to put water where his mouth is. Keith Olbermann issued this challenge to Sean Hannity after defiant statements he made on his program, volunteering to be waterboarded in support of "charity and families of the troops". Keith welcomes Lawrence O'Donnell, political analyst and Writer/Producer of 'The West Wing' to talk about Hannity's perplexing boast.

VIDEO: Keith Olbermann talks to Lawrence O'Donnell about Sean Hannity and waterboarding

Hannity volunteers to be waterboarded
--snippet of Sean Hannity's show played--
CHARLES GRODIN (actor): So you're for torture right?
SEAN HANNITY: I am for enhanced interrogations, I don't believe waterboarding is torture.
GRODIN: So you don't believe its torture. Have you ever been waterboarded?
HANNITY: No. But Ollie North has and I talked to him about it.
GRODIN: Would you consent to be waterboarded so we can get the truth out of you?
HANNITY: Yeah. Sure. I'll do it for charity. I'll let you do it. I'll do it for the troops families
--end clip--

KEITH OLBERMANN: Ah yes another conservative talking big and living small. They're not taking this seriously and they are talking out of their backsides. What a breakthrough it would be if by having reality literally forced upon him, a buffoon like Hannity were to realise the deadly seriousness of this. The searing truth that moment of torture automatically makes the presumed bad guy recipient - the victim. And makes the torturer into the evil-doer. If Hannity could suddenly have this epiphany and involuntarily reveal it to those who somehow take him seriously. He'll do it for charity, for the troops families? I'll take you up on that Sean. For a every second you last, a $1000... A $1000 a second because this is no game...
Once again pro-wrestling has been there and done that. Watch "Million Dollar Man" Ted Dibiase naming his price to get some water action of his own. Even I can't believe I found this one:

Janeane Garofalo and Keith Olbermann on "teabagging" and racism

VIDEO: Janeane Garofalo talking 'Tea Parties' on Keith Olbermann's Countdown

I featured Janeane Garofalo's last appearance on Olbermann's show, teaming up against Rush Limbaugh largely because I expected a rebuttal. The only rebuttal came via Fox News' Red Eye. Janeane returns as guest with Olbermann this time to eviscerate "teabaggers" who demonstrated during the Tax Day Tea Parties.

The combination of Garofalo with Olbermann is highly provocative and somewhat predictable. Janeane has her charms and is an able debater. She famously had a segment on her Air America show 'Majority Report' where she would debate with her conservative father, a retired Exxon executive. When "proud liberal" Janeane Garofalo partners with the highly partisan Keith Olbermann, the host acts as an accelerant creating goading television that serves only to alienate the other side.

What conservative Newsbusters' describes as
Garofalo: Tea Party Goers Are Racists Who Hate Black President
...for what Olbermann and Garofalo engaged in Thursday evening is amongst the most vile, hate-filled attacks on average American citizens ever conveyed on national television by so-called journalists.
Read the full conversation transcript from Newsbusters:
Garofalo: Tea Party Goers Are Racists Who Hate Black President
JANEANE GAROFALO: Thank you. You know, there's nothing more interesting than seeing a bunch of racists become confused and angry at a speech they're not quite certain what he's saying. It sounds right and then it doesn't make sense. Which, let's be very honest about what this is about. It's not about bashing Democrats, it's not about taxes, they have no idea what the Boston tea party was about, they don't know their history at all. This is about hating a black man in the White House. This is racism straight up. That is nothing but a bunch of teabagging rednecks. And there is no way around that. And you know, you can tell these type of right wingers anything and they'll believe it, except the truth. You tell them the truth and they become -- it's like showing Frankenstein's monster fire. They become confused, and angry and highly volatile.
Update: Race and Ron Paul
Seeing as Janeane brought up the issues of race and the corporate hijacking of the Tea Parties, I'd like to highlight a thoughtful discussion and spririted debate at popular White Nationalist forum, Stormfront.

As a sidenote, its worth noting that the 'Tax Day Tea Parties' partially stemmed from the movement that sprung during Ron Paul's Presidential Campaign. Paul ran on a platform that can superficially be described as being for:
1) Smaller Government
2) A fairer and simpler tax code
3) Equally taking to task Republicans and Democrats

Ironically many of the people and pundits who are on board with the Tea Parties are the same people who ridiculed the popular but marginalised movement spearheaded by Ron Paul. The pundits who were at least respectful towards Ron Paul include Bill Maher, Glenn Beck and Tucker Carlson with a recent about face from Ann Coulter. It's worth taking this into account as this informs the discussion being held at Stormfront
Were The Tea Parties Hijacked?
Because those people are all part of the problem. For over a decade now, these "conservative" commentators have helped frame the political debate in this country. They choose which stories are important, and conversely, they decide which stories aren't. By focusing the country's attention on petty issues, they distract us from the real problems in America. More than anything, these people are just in it for the money. They make sure to keep the debate shallow, so that there's no risk of it ever getting out of their control, and thereby slashing their profit margin. They build us up to be sheep, and themselves as our sheppards (sic). As I said, all they care about is profit, and their listeners and viewers are simply tools to get it. As long as these people control the debate on the right, it will never evolve beyond petty controllable issues.

Update II: The Backlash
I featured this Garofalo/Olbermann clip primarily because I anticipated a spirited counterattack. Whilst the first Garofalo-Olbermann connection only got a mild response, this one has found it's mark. Judging by these clips Janeane could take the honour for being the APF's current Top Heel (villain).

Fox News' Red Eye picks up the mantle once again

Video: Fox News' Red Eye on Olbermann and Garofalo - Round 2
GREG GUTFELD: She's as smart as she is hot. That's right, nobody's favourite artist Janeane Garofalo... was at it again on Countdown with Keith Olbermann... you may remember in February this sad little creature... compared women who listen to Rush Limbaugh to Eva Braun (Hitler's girlfriend). Well now she's focused her lizard-like brain on the half million or more people who attended Tea Parties
Mark Levin cuts a mean promo on Janeane Garofalo and Keith Olbermann
Video: Mark Levin says no conservative should work for MSNBC
MARK LEVIN: I want you to listen to this piece of crap. This piece of crap, this walking disorder - Janeane Garofalo. Now Janeane Garofalo tried radio, she's a failure. She tried acting, she's a failure. She's tried comedy, she's a failure. She's tried being a human being, she's a failure. She's a miscreant and a menace. And she's on a show with biggest pervert in the media - Keith Olbermann, Countdown to No Ratings. A pervert, a slob, a moron. Now how do I know this, because his ex-girlfriends write to me and tell me what a sleazeball he is. That's right Keithie, you punk. I know all about you, you are sick.

Now let's listen to these two morons. Let's listen to this one in particular, this Janeane Garofalo. This walking mental disorder...

LOU DOBBS: She's a one-woman hate event. She's just nasty, nasty piece of business. My lord, and to be on the Keith Olbermann show. You know a lot of meds running around there. His bile spewing everywhere. Listen to this exchange on that unwatchable broadcast. Here she is with her own sweet perspective, if this isn't enough to revolt anyone I don't know what would be required.

Worst Person in the World: Keith Olbermann cuts a promo on "Harold Hill" Glenn Beck calling him an "accessory" [to murder?]

VIDEO: Glenn "Accessory" Beck Worst Person

MSNBC's Keith Olbermann cut a promo on Glenn Beck in a recent 'Worst Person' segment of his show. In pro wrestling, "cutting a promo" is the act of getting on the mic and delivering an impassioned speech, usually to call out another wrestler.

Olbermann's charge was similar to Bill Maher's criticism that Glenn Beck's brand of populism incites militia style violence, misguided fanaticism where people begin taking the law in their own hands. Glenn Beck promptly responded to that charge masterfully affirming his "you are not alone/ we surround them" meme
Bill Maher and Keith Olbermann on Glenn Beck + Beck's response
GLENN BECK: But I guarantee you, anyone who grabs a gun, criminal, insane, whatever and starts shooting people. If they've even watched Fox News, look out! They're just waiting for some nutjob, that way they can take what you believe and twist it to -- well see "look at what these people believe. I mean they're doing horrible things with them." And they're gonna blame it on those beliefs. They're gonna blame it on the people who talk about those beliefs. The people who listen to those beliefs. That is me and that is you.
Olbermann awarded Glenn Beck his Worst Person in the World, referring to him as 'Harold Hill' based on the conman salesman from the 'Music Man' - think Lyle Lanley from the monorail episode of The Simpsons.
KEITH OLBERMANN: But our winner "Harold Hill" again, its about his continuing attempt to disassociate himself with his inflammatory paranoia...

So videogames can cause people to try to kill police and television caused the doubling of the homicide rate. But Glenn Beck reducing the complexities of the world to the level of a video game for his television viewers and telling them to "rise up and take back their country before the government takes their guns". That couldn't possibly have anything to do with one of those viewers rising up and taking back his country before the government takes his guns. Glenn Beck "accessory" - Today's worst Person in the World
Expect Beck to respond to Olbermann's charge with even more vigor than he did returning fire to Bill Maher's criticism.
