Glenn Beck: President Obama why don't you just set us on fire?

VIDEO: Bill Schulz gets drenched in "Gasoline" by Glenn Beck
GLENN BECK: ...President Obama why don't you just set us on fire? For the love of Pete, what are you doing? Do you not hear the cries of people saying STOP!
Played out in the equally theatrical wrestling world; In Glenn Beck's mind President Obama would be 'Kane', the American people would be Jim Ross and Glenn Beck as fan favorite 'Stone Cold Steve Austin'.

Update:
Upon further review, maybe Jim Ross represents America ("The Republic") and the voices yelling "Stop/ What are you doing?" are the American people.

VIDEO: Kane sets Jim Ross on fire

Update 2:
Its unspoken but the APF pundits are based on analogous wrestler templates. I alluded in a previous post which wrestlers might have been references for the Glenn Beck pundit. With this video I'm starting to like Stone Cold as the analog, it certainly wasn't evident a year ago. Glenn Beck like 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin is a fan favorite best known for taking it to the man, tormenting 'the boss' with theatrical stunts. For Beck's detractors, he's "Stone Cold crazy" eh eh.

Here is the new Glenn Beck pundit animation, with updated details to reflect his new persona and popularity. Click on the toggle on the bottom left corner to switch between outfits.

Introducing the newest APF Pundit - Mark Steyn

As a special request for reader Kathy who was kind enough to keep me in the loop. The APF proudly introduces Mark Steyn to it's roster of pundits.

Mark Steyn is a contributing writer and columnist for multiple publications around the world. Mark is one the privileged few Rush Limbaugh tags to helm the #1 show in his absence. He is also a weekly guest on the Hugh Hewitt Show.

Go to Mark Steyn's official website. To view the list of publications Mark contributes to, visit his bio and FAQ page.

Mark has authored 4 political books:
1) The Face of the Tiger (Collected essays, 2002)
2) Mark Steyn From Head To Toe: An Anatomical Anthology (2004)
3) Mark Steyn's Passing Parade (Paperback, 2006)
4) America Alone: The End of the World As We Know It (2008)

Steyn writes with a dry wit and sarcasm. Evident in the the endorsements he proudly displays on his site, tongue firmly in cheek. His dry writing has got him in hot water recently, after a Human rights complaint against Maclean's magazine which implicated some of Steyn's articles. Mark was awarded the 2006 Eric Breindel Award for Excellence in Opinion Journalism for his article 'Be glad the flag is worth burning'.

Update:
A banner for 'Free Mark Steyn' advocates to place on their sites, fire an email and i'll gladly provide the code. Read more about the case here.

Latest APF Profile - Pete Dominick

I'm happy to announce Pete Dominick as the latest addition to the APF roster. Pete is the second independent pundit featured on the site, accompanying Bill O'Reilly who had long been the lone independent.

You will find a feature and interview of Pete Dominick here. Though it wasn't designed intentionally, the addition of Pete Dominick means I've interviewed a Liberal talker, a Conservative talker and finally an independent talker. Not bad.

As with every new Pundit to the APF we include the obligatory Pundit animations. This is a another two-fer animation with the button on the bottom left allowing you to toggle Pete's outfit.

Profile: Bill O'reilly

bill oreilly factor pundit

Apologies for my lack of posting. To get back into the swing of things here is a new profile. I usually do my profiles in pairs but when you're talking Bill O'Reilly...

Bill O'Reilly is one of the most prolific and dominant pundits on the APF. He is host of a self-titled cable program on Fox News' The O'Reilly Factor'. The show comprises many popular segments, among them: 'Talking Points Memo' and 'Pinheads & Patriots'. O'Reilly features fellow APF pundits Michelle Malkin, Laura Ingraham and Dennis Miller as guests and fill-in hosts. O'Reilly's presentation and show format is famously parodied by comedian Stephen Colbert.

Bill also hosts a radio program for Westwood One, 'The Radio Factor'.

Bill has written numerous books, many becoming #1 New York Times' Best Sellers:
1) Those Who Trespass: A Novel of Television and Murder, April 1998 (Novel)
2) The O'Reilly Factor: The Good, the Bad, and the Completely Ridiculous in American Life, Sept 2000
3) The No Spin Zone: Confrontations with the Powerful and Famous in America, Oct 2001
4) Who's Looking Out for You?, 2003
5) The O'Reilly Factor for Kids: A Survival Guide for America's Families, 2004
6) Culture Warrior, 2006
7) Kids Are Americans Too, 2007
8) A Bold Fresh Piece of Humanity (2008)

Bill is best known for his bloviating and crusading persona, his boycotts and confrontational interviews. Bill has had some memorable clashes with guests and has long running feuds with critics (mostly from the left). These include: Liberal website 'Daily KOs' and APF personalities Keith Olbermann and Al Franken.

Bill O'Reilly was the anchor for the first version of CNN's Inside Edition. He has won numerous journalism awards including two Emmys and a National Headliner Award. Bill has a comprehensive personal website to manage his mini empire.

New Profile: Andrew Wilkow

I'm proud to announce the latest Animation Profile - Andrew Wilkow. It's a bit of an innovation from previous profiles. You will notice a toggle on the bottom left corner that will allow you to view Andrew in two different outfits, 'Suit' and 'Street' in keeping with Andrew's unique personality. I've also revamped the accompanying Republican logo to reflect Andrew's "younger" look.

In the near future expect to see new animations with a stable (team) of APF pundits. The first stable incorporating Andrew Wilkow shoulder to shoulder with Sean Hannity and Mark Levin. At this stage the tentative title for the stable is "The Freedom Alliance" though I'm open to suggestion. Your comments welcome below.

For fans of Andrew who'd like to promote his show. Email me below to get the code to have these animations featured on your site or myspace page:

Introducing the newest APF Pundit - Andrew Wilkow

Andrew Wilkow, sirius, interview
A conversation with Andrew Wilkow
Deconstructing punditry using a pro-wrestling analogy, part of what I do on this blog is identify archetypes. To be a successful talker, passion for a cause is a prerequisite as well as an engaging persona that commands attention. Conservative Radio Talker Andrew Wilkow has all these qualities, but he also doesn’t fit the usual molds.

I first heard Andrew filling in for Mark Levin. I was immediately drawn to his championing of conservative principles from a youth perspective, coupling information with logic and philosophy. The hook that drew me in was his glowing praise for Metal band ‘Avenged Sevenfold’ and his suggestion that conservatives begin to explore art as an avenue for furthering and promoting conservative thought.

With hip shows like The Daily Show and The Colbert Report providing a gateway for younger audiences to be engaged in political discussion I pictured Andrew as the conservative antidote. This was confirmed the more I listened to him, but not in the way I originally thought.

At 35, Andrew is one of the youngest radio talkers you’ll find of any stripe. Although you’ll hear him in a tone that reflects a connection with the youth, you won’t hear him dumbing things down or patronizing his audience. Andrew isn’t interested in competing for the youth by being cool at the expense of rational thought and mature discussion, “That type of sarcasm as a stand in for intellectual thought and good debating is gonna run its course eventually.”

Andrew spends a majority of his show explaining and rationalizing liberal thinking. The non-commercial format of his show on Sirius Satellite Radio works to Andrew’s advantage as it allows him to expand on his ideas providing a fuller more pure experience, “My program is designed to not be condescending, not be esoteric…I can take an argument, I can break it down, build a new foundation then build a house on top of it, dust my hands and say See that’s how it works”

Andrew Wilkow is also known for being co-founder of ConservativePunk.com. He formed it with his now-producer Nick Rizzuto. Nick had sent an email after hearing Andrew talk about how “the politics began to take over the music”. A friendship was formed and after some “beers and burgers cooked up Conservative Punk”, Andrew continues “within a day or two of launching we had 1000 members and the BBC flew a crew out from the UK to interview us.” Many would know Conservative Punk as the counterweight to Punkvoter.com - a high profile campaign organized by ‘Fat Mike’ of legendary punk band NOFX. An initiative which enlisted fellow punkers, mainstream rock acts like Green Day and Foo Fighters and their fans to oust George W Bush in the 2004 presidential elections.

Punk is often regarded as being anti-establishment, likewise Punk is also synonymous with being contrarian, asking questions and fighting against groupthink, something the South Park guys have made a living off. Conservative Punk isn’t an exercise at just being contrarian, Andrew is quick to remind that “Johnny Ramone was a Reagan Republican” though ultimately it’s a moot point “I go to a music event to listen to music, I don’t really care about the opinions held by the band one way or another… nobody owns the music”

Don't expect to find Andrew making his name from dissing fellow talkers. There is a graciousness and respect for his competition, be it left or right because he knows “the road to talk radio is really, really hard”. You could sum up Andrew’s career as the collision of passion, hard work and opportunity. His first major break came from a “risktaker” that saw talent and found him “compelling”. A young woman heard Andrew as a Rock DJ and recommended it to her father. That man happened to be Phil Boyce, the Program Director who revitalized NewsTalkRadio WABC (AM) in New York City and the man responsible for giving Sean Hannity and Mark Levin their big breaks. Andrew began his talk career as a trial fill-in for Mark Levin, eventually inheriting the weekend timeslot as Mark moved up. Andrew was later enlisted by Sirius Satellite Radio, adding him to their conservative roster on the ‘Sirius Patriot’ channel. The young woman who first took notice of Andrew would later become his wife.

Mark enjoys a camaraderie with Sean Hannity and Mark Levin. Andrew is one of the privileged few “Mark allows to fill in for him” and one of the few people Hannity allows to broadcast from his ‘Freedom Concert. It’s no surprise that Sirius have programmed Andrew with his colleagues, kicking off a formidable 8 hour bloc from noon which continues with Hannity then Levin.

With the support of influential friends and a cutting edge media in Sirius Satellite Radio, you can expect big things from Andrew Wilkow. Quoting from his website, “Now is the time for the new school of conservative voices with a whole new style and passion – moving to SIRIUS lets me take that style and passion nationwide."

Dean Barnett: The newest APF member

Dean Barnett

We have some exciting news APF fans, Dean Barnett has been announced as the latest member of the American Pundit Fighting roster. Dean's profile** is well underway and now i'm calling on the APF audience to determine his vital stats.

What is Dean's orientation? Is he a 'heel' or 'face'. A heel is a villain, someone you love to hate. A face is a heroic figure, someone you look up to and root for to win. Whilst a pundit's orientation is determined by the audience, it is actually manufactured by the pundit's chosen persona and delivery style. Ann Coulter is a good example of someone hated by the pundit's own design.

What is Dean's special move?
What specialty manouver would Dean use. Make sure you come up with a catchy name.

What is Dean's Pop rating? A 'pop' is the amount of love a pundit gets. The gushing praise and cheer that greets their entrance. This is the amount of positive blog postings and exposure Dean would get from the blogosphere. It might be the ratings hike that occurs when he fills in for APF partner Hugh Hewitt on the Radio.

What is Dean's Heat Rating? How much animosity is directed towards Dean. Does he get much negative exposure on the blogosphere. Does he get a lot of hate mail? Does he get dissed by other pundits.

What is Dean's Charm rating? How charming is the man?

Remember whilst a 'pop' is positive, it is not necessarily just reserved for 'faces'. Nor is 'heat' simply reserved for 'heels'. Take Rush Limbaugh as an example, Rush is adored by millions of conservatives and he is widely considered the most influential pundit of all time. But consider that he is also passionately demonised and despised by the left. His ability to engender such hatred with one community whilst being revered by another makes him a successful pundit. He is talked about and he is listened to. He is known. Charm plays a big factor in this.

**Its been brought to my attention that Dean prefers a low profile as evidenced by the lack of photos on google/images. The only picture i could find was a deliberate wide shot. Fingers crossed my pundit bears some likeness.

Profile 3: Sean Hannity, Janeane Garofalo

Janeane Garofalo is a comedian, political activist and one-time radio host. Currently Janeane is possibly the least professionally active pundit in the APF. Janeane rose to prominence as a pundit in 2003 during the lead up to the Iraq War campaigning on behalf of groups like Move On and Win Without War, appearing in commercials for the latter. Prior to the war she represented one of the few dissenting voices allowed on mainstream media. In March 2004, Janeane co hosted radio program The Majority Report with friend (and fellow APF pundit) Sam Seder, she was regularly absent from the show due to her acting engagements leaving the show finally on July 2006.

The APF pundits profiled

I will be doing a quick feature on each of the pundits for the next few weeks. They will be short revisions on what the current APF pundits are doing or have done and what headlines they are making.
Do not be surprised to see shorter recaps on some pundits as the spotlight primarily features more recent or relevant works. Older work especially if they have broken (internet) links won't be featured. The pundits will be featured in alphabetical order.
This is done as service for those who may not know much about particular pundits. Think of it as Wikipedia lite, or rather an APFpunditopedia full of links minus those that link to other Wiki entries.
